KUCHING: Challenges such as traffic congestion, housing affordability and environmental concerns are the by-products of rapid urbanisation and Sarawak is no exception.

Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said sustainable urban planning has therefore become increasingly vital to enhance the quality life of the people.

“The Malaysia Urban Forum (MUF) 2023 is taking place here, marking a significant milestone for the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable future,”he said at its opening here yesterday.

He said the inclusive national-level platform has brought together various stakeholders to focus on sustainable urban development in alignment with the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Under the theme “Catalysing Transformative Actions for Sustainable and Resilient Urbanisation,” the MUF 2023 seeks to address the global trend of urbanisation, which significantly impacts social, economic and environmental landscapes.

“Sarawak has launched the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, aiming to create a thriving society driven by data and innovation, fostering economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability,”he said.

One of the focal points of the forum is the City Stage, set for Nov 6-8, where PCDS 2030 and various initiatives will be thoroughly discussed.

These include topics such as Kuching Urban Transportation System, a Low Carbon Industrial Hub, Miri as a Green Smart International Resort City, and strategies for developing Sarawak’s human capital for economic prosperity, social inclusivity and sustainability.

“DBKU’s commitment to becoming a Low Carbon City by 2025-2030 and its choice of the Legacy Project, the Revitalisation of Kuching City River Transport – Perahu Tambang, exemplify the city’s dedication to sustainability,”said Kuching North City Council (DBKU) mayor Hilmy Othman in his speech.

“This project includes the development of a digital app for the traditional river transport and initiatives to enhance community well-being, tourism, and environmental preservation.

“DBKU will be launching its Legacy Project, the Perahu Tambang app, aligning with government efforts in digitalisation,”he said.

Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was exchanged between DBKU and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), focusing on the DBKU Low Carbon City Masterplan, in line with DBKU’s strategic thrusts.

The forum hosts a range of activities and sessions, with 300 speakers participating, including panels, keynote presentations, and expert talks.

This forum emphasises the importance of translating discussions and ideas into concrete actions to bring meaningful change to cities.

“These represents a vital step towards a more sustainable and resilient urban future, setting the stage for positive developments in Sarawak and beyond,”he said.
