Willie: Independence not to be taken lightly

PADAWAN: Puncak Borneo incumbent Datuk Willie Mongin said the celebration of Independence Day and Malaysia Day is very significant in reminding the people of the importance of safeguarding the blessings of independence.

“Undoubtedly, some of the new generation take it lightly and think that the history of independence is not important.

“We should recall (the historic event) and give credit to the previous generations who sacrificed to grant the freedom we relish now.”

Willie who is Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister said this at the Puncak Borneo Merdeka programme at Teng Bukap multipurpose hall on Today (Sept 10).

As the incumbent of Puncak Borneo, he said his office has publicised awareness of the celebration through mass media.

“Every time I visit the villages here, our side also gives information sessions and gives awareness so that independence can be appreciated.

“I also call on people from all walks of life to play their respective roles to apply this appreciation to future generations,” he added.

The programme, which was organised by the Sarawak Information Department (JaPen), was well-attended by local residents.

It was also joined in by the Kembara Merdeka Keluarga Malaysia convoy team consisting of the OnXOn Big Bikers Club, Ti’Kuan Big Bikers, Bidayuh Big Bikers, 4 X 4 Padawan as well as local community leaders.

The convoy was led by Willie accompanied by 40 high-powered motorcycles and 20 four-wheel drive vehicles.
