KUCHING: The seventh Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) Christmas Open House will be held this coming Saturday (Dec 17) at the Old Court House from 12pm to 3pm.

Themed ‘Celebration of Life: Reflection in Gratitude’, the event which is also part of STF’s Visit Sarawak Open House Campaign, is open to local and international tourists.

The programme is a collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts of Sarawak, supported by Brooke Museums, Business Events Sarawak, Sarawak Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia Sarawak, Food Journal and Borneo Happy Team.

STF president Audry Wan Ullok said the objective of the open house events is for visitors and locals alike, regardless of race and religion in the multi-racial community to experience the celebrations and traditions of the open house concept in Sarawak, which is unique and not found anywhere else.

“In light of this special celebration of life and gratitude, the organiser has once again chosen the ‘Theme of Rice: Rice to the Occasion’ as its main focus for the delicacies selection as it’s not only the most important human food crop in providing food security but rice too, has shaped the cultures, diets and economies of thousands of millions of people,” she told a press conference for the upcoming events today (Dec 12).

She said STF aims to offer the public over 20 different types of local cuisine and beverages, all made from rice.

“Our focus also is to share this festive Christmas spirit of love and giving as we engage with local communities, especially with underprivileged and the B40 low income groups.

“With this beautiful spirit of giving, caring and sharing, it leaves no doubt that the spirit of unity and tolerance among the diverse and multi-racial communities in Sarawak is the best example for other states in Malaysia to emulate,” she added.

With the expectation of 500 people – local and international tourists – several programmes will also be held throughout the events, such as Christmas carolling, presentation of donations to some charity homes and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), ‘Rice to the Occasion’ Charity Food Fair and Fun Time with Pet Animals.
