THERE is more than meets the eye when it comes to Mohamad Duri (GPS- Kalaka).

Known for his infectious smile and calm demeanor, Mohamad Duri is also soft spoken and a popular figure in his constituency.

But, one of the more interesting facts about him is that he is a dedicated sportsman, an advocate for the youth as well as a philanthropist among other traits as revealed, during a sit down with him.

Below, is an excerpt of New Sarawak Tribune’s interview with him at the sidelines of the State Legislative Assembly sitting today (Nov 20).

New Sarawak Tribune: What is your hobby during your free time?

Mohamad Duri: I am a sportsman, since I was in school, I have always ventured into sports especially football, sepak takraw, volleyball and basketball. I also play golf, especially in the evening, I would play golf at the Kelab Golf Sarawak course which is near my house.

When I was in school, I represented the school or the faculty, to me sports was for me to make friends. When I was active in sports, I met many people. Especially golf, we get to network and forge close friendships due to common interest. We tell stories and exchange information regarding sports.

What are your memorable moments as an assemblyman?

I feel sad whenever a friend or an advisor in politics has passed on. In the kampung (village) there was one whom I visited and then he passed away a while after. There was also this teacher who used to conduct haji classes. I visited him. I was grateful to be able to meet and spend time with him.

What motivates you to keep on going to serve?

I feel motivated when I can assist the people socio-economically, especially in the rural area. When I help the people with their drainage, they are able to continue farming. When I am instructed to make roads, people are able to continue farming.

That’s something that motivates me, the people are able to gain income and assist their family members.

What is your daily routine as an assemblyman?

First of all, health must be the main priority, from the get go as I wake up, I would say my prayers. It is very important to also forgive people. Whenever I make mistakes, I ask for forgiveness so when we meet once again, we can smile. These are my routines. I also take time to wash my car, when I am free, that is one form of exercise that I do.
