KUCHING:  An environmental group, Sarawak Eco-Warriors, is inviting youth to take part in the Sarawak Youth Green Leaders Workshop 2023.

The workshop from May 20 to 21 is aimed at bringing together 20 youth aged 18 to 35 based in Kuching.

It will address knowledge and capacity gaps in biodiversity governance and empower youth to make more meaningful contributions in environmental sustainability.

According to Sarawak Eco-Warriors president Mark Liao, the group is hoping to get more youth engaged in the decision-making processes.

He said it is crucial to make sure that youth have the understanding and capacity to make meaningful contributions.

“Over the last seven years, I have met many youths who are keen on contributing towards sustainability, but simply do not have opportunities to contribute beyond the grassroots level,” he said in a statement today.

Liao said the workshop is supported by local and international organisations namely Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Swinburne Sarawak Green Club, Global Youth Biodiversity Network Southeast Asia, The European Union, and Asean Centre of Biodiversity.

“Youth who are keen on joining the workshop may submit their applications by May 16 at www.bit.ly/swakgreenleaders,” he added.

Meanwhile, SFC chief executive officer Zolkipli Mohamad Aton said the corporation believes that biodiversity conservation requires the participation of all as one of the core thrusts.

“As such, SFC puts emphasis on its employee development to produce passionate employees who are youthful and mature in ensuring continuity in its endeavour for a better future.

“Investment in youth either though internships or engaging with them in events such as this means working with the youth’s passion in conservation now,” he said.
