KUCHING: Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) has set the zakat fitrah rate in the state for this year at RM7.50, announced Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shilbli Abang Mohd Nailie.

“The RM7.50 rate is still affordable for our Muslim community, allowing them to fulfill this responsibility.

“I encourage everyone to contribute as early as possible, from the first of Ramadan to the end of Ramadan, as this will facilitate the task for numerous amils across Sarawak in delivering the collections to TBS,” he said.

Abang Mohd Shilbli disclosed this during a press conference after a “Back to School” programme for the asnaf or underprivileged children at the Ummah Distribution Centre (UDC) here today.

He also mentioned that zakat payments could be made at TBS counters and to the 788 amils in Sarawak and online.

“The amils are generally at mosques or suraus, and some operate from home, in office complexes, or in the shopping malls in Sarawak.

“The collection from the amils will be used by TBS to give to the asnaf or needy who are eligible to ease their Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration and their daily use,” he stated.

For the record, Sabah’s zakat fitrah rate also stands at RM7.50 while the zakat fitrah rate of Pahang and Perlis is RM7.

Perak and Selangor also recently announced their zakat fitrah rates whereby Perak’s rate is set at RM8, RM16, and RM24, depending on the household head’s affordability, while Selangor’s rate is set at RM7, RM14, and RM21, depending on the type of rice consumed by the household.
