12 motorists detained for drink driving

MIRI: Twelve motorists aged between 24 and 64 years were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during ‘Ops Mabuk’ conducted at Jalan Miri-Bintulu on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

A total 80 individuals were checked during the five-hour operation which kicked off at 11.30pm Saturday. During that period, a total 32 summonses for various traffic offences were issued to errant motorists.

Miri Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said a total 80 vehicles were inspected in the operation.

The errant motorists will be investigated under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine not less than RM1,000 and not above RM6,000 or a jail term not exceeding six months upon  conviction.

“We will carry out this operation continuously to ensure that drivers are not on the road after drinking alcohol,” said Alexson.
