KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has embarked on a groundbreaking project to upgrade outdated surveillance systems in Taman Sahabat.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the council has taken decisive action to deploy cutting-edge technology aimed at fortifying community safety.

Initiated a decade ago, he said the antiquated closed-circuit television (CCTV) network in Taman Sahabat had become increasingly unreliable, with the majority of units failing by 2023.

“The council has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak for funding under Malaysia Plan 12 to replace the outdated CCTV infrastructure in Taman Sahabat.

“The funding was approved in late 2023, leading to the tendering of the project in March 2024.

“Works on the latest CCTV project have commenced, with cabling works initiated in April,” he said in a statement.

Scheduled for completion by June 2024, the revamped surveillance network promises to revolutionise security at Taman Sahabat.

Boasting unparalleled features such as high-resolution imaging, expanded storage capacity, and cutting-edge AI analytics, the new CCTV system is poised to become a formidable tool in combating criminal activity.

“MBKS expresses deepest regrets to the victim of the unfortunate crime and seeks understanding that this problem has already been addressed earlier on, and the solution is on the way.

“The council seeks to reassure the public that their safety and security have always been a top priority of the council,” he added.

Looking ahead, he assured that the council remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering a secure environment for all residents.

He said more relevant and innovative solutions will be implemented to further guarantee the peace and security of the surrounding residents.
