1,436 notices issued to commercial vehicle owners

SIBU: The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued a total of 1,436 enforcement notices against commercial vehicle owners for various offences.

Sarawak JPJ deputy director Noraini Mohd Nawi said the notices were issued from Sept 1 to 26.

“The figure includes 1,110 summons notices and 326 enforcement notices, issued under the Road Transport Act 1987, the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Act 1987 and the Road Transport Rules 1987, including overloading offences.

“Commercial vehicles suspected of committing overloading offences will be ordered to weigh in at a designated location in accordance with Section 63(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” she said after officiating at the state-level ‘Ops Khas Kenderaan Komersil’ at the Stapang Enforcement Station along KM48, Jalan Sibu-Bintulu on Tuesday (Sept 26).

The operation was held to improve enforcement, detect and take action against commercial vehicles, especially those involved in overloading offences.

Noraini added that the operation will be held continuously throughout Sarawak to ensure a higher level of compliance with road safety regulations among drivers of commercial vehicles.

Also present were Sarawak JPJ Enforcement Division chief Maya Morshidi, Sibu JPJ chief Mohamad Faizal David Jemat and Sibu JPJ Enforcement Division chief Nurul Faireizzah Safri.

In a similar development, Noraini stated that the department will continue enforcement targeting motorcycles through the ‘Ops Khas Motosikal’, which is carried out from Sept 1 to 30.

“The operation is to detect various traffic offences committed by motorcyclists such as running red lights, not having driving/riding licence, not having road tax as well as other technical offences and vehicle modifications.”

From Sept 1 to 25, a total of 11,272 motorcycles were inspected across Sarawak.

Sarawak JPJ has issued a total of 2,268 summons notices and 188 enforcement notices for various offences committed by motorcyclists.

Throughout the period, the department also confiscated a total of 51 motorcycles.
