1,467 flood survivors return home as weather improves

KUCHING: Good weather conditions and receded floodwaters in four divisions, have allowed 1,467 flood survivors to return to their respective homes on Monday (March 4).

According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) Secretariat, the temporary relief centres (PPS) in Kuching, Bau, Lundu and Serian were officially closed at 9am, 2pm and 3.30pm.

However, as of 4pm, only one PPS, Dewan Kampung Slabi Entukuh in Serian, remains open with 44 evacuees from nine families seeking temporary refuge.

The six centres that were closed in Kuching are Dewan R-Piang Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Dewan Serbaguna Taman Malihah, Dewan Masyarakat Stapok, SJK Chung Hua Batu Kawa, SJK Chung Hua Sungai Tengah and SJK Chung Hua Sejijak.

In Bau, SDMC said that the Dewan Kampung Segong PPS and Balai Raya Kampung Senibong PPS were closed at 9am.

Meanwhile, in Serian Division, three PPS, namely Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Mundai, Balai Raya Kampung Melayu Balai Ringin and Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Ensebang Padang Bilon, were closed at 2pm and 3.30pm.

Continuous downpour since last Friday night (March 1), have prompted the opening of 14 PPS between 8am on Saturday (March 2) and 5pm on Sunday (March 3).

In Bintulu, only one PPS, Balai Raya Kampung Assyakirin, is still open since it was first established on Jan 18 to accommodate 14 storm survivors from four families, whose apartments in Iris Garden-Pine Court were badly damaged in a freak storm.
