MIRI: A total of 1,565 aid recipients in Miri Division will receive cash donations totalling RM156,500 in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak 2023 celebration.

At the Sejambak Kasih Gawai Dayak 2023 ceremony, a total of 100 aid recipients received cash aid of RM100 and hampers worth RM150 donated by Dynasty Hotel during the ceremony today.

The event was organised by the Social Welfare Department (SWD) Miri aimed to  strengthen the relationship between the community and the department.

“Also it is to show the concern of the state government for the less able and less fortunate.

“It is to promote and enhance awareness among the local community about the welfare of the less able and less fortunate and to realise the formation of a loving society,” said Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

In Miri Division, from January to April this year, a total of RM7,330,750 was allocated to 4,498 aid recipients.

In the same event, in preparation for the drought season, SWD has identified suppliers who will supply drinking water stocks, which will be provided to the affected areas.

“Each victim of a drought season will receive two boxes of 1.5 liters of drinking water per person for a week’s consumption.

“In total, there are 27 disaster front bases throughout Sarawak which serve to store disaster supplies which will be released in the event of a disaster,” she said.

For the period from January to March this year, in Miri Division there were five fire cases involving 15 families consisting of 83 victims who received RM45,450 in aid.

The amount includes immediate aid amounting to RM40,450 and building materials which cost RM5,000.

“Hence, we urge those affected to utilise the donations given and aid recipients need to be more confident and positive thinking in venturing into all fields that can improve living standards and not be completely dependent on aid,” she said.
