MIRI: A total of 19 people, including tourists and potters who were stranded on a riverine island while on their way to Camp 1 of Mulu National park on Sunday, have been rescued.

All of the victims, including a 68-year-old tourist from the Netherlands, were reported safe.

According to Marudi Fire and Rescue chief Maureen Sim, upon receiving a distress call regarding the 12.30 pm incident on Sunday, a search and rescue (SAR) team was immediately formed to rescue the victims.

“The victims were stranded on a riverine island, located about 20 minutes away from Camp 1 due to heavy downpour that morning,” she said.

A team from the Mountain and Cave Search rescue Mulu were dispatched to the scene, where rescue works took about three hours and 30 minutes.

Heavy downpour that occurred in the morning had submerged surrounding areas.

Fortunately, the operations went smoothly and all stranded victims were rescued.

The operation ended at 11 pm on Sunday.
