SARIKEI: Thanks to a public tip-off, another illegal logging operation has been stopped dead in its track by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) at Bukit Sengkabang, Sare near here on Wednesday.
“Our enforcement team at One-Stop Compliance Centre (OSCC) Sarikei went into action soon after receiving information about suspicious logging activities at the said location.
“The subsequent raid of the site found 199 pieces of illegal logs with an estimated volume of 90 cubic metres (m3). The logs comprising various sizes and tree species are believed to be from illegal logging at the forest nearby. None of the logs bear any official markings and were subsequently detained upon confirming that no license to extract timber has been issued at the area,” said SFC in a statement yesterday.
The corporation said a report on the incident was lodged at Sarikei Police Station and the case was handed over to the relevant authority for further investigation and disposal.
The SFC said its OSCCs had detected 13 illegal logging cases and seized 1,496 logs during the first quarter of this year.
