KUCHING: The zakat fitrah (personal) rate this year has been set at RM7 per person by the Sarawak Mufti Department, says Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS).

TBS general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie said payment could be made starting Tuesday (April 13) should the fasting month begin on the said date, subject to the official announcement from the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal.

“Payment can be done through various channels namely through 790 amil (zakat appointee) or online via the ‘Baitulmal Kamek’ portal, TBS app and Sarawak Pay.

“We have loosened the restriction this year. Previously, zakat fitrah can only be paid to the appointed amil at his residence and cannot be done at the mosque.

“This year, payment can be made at the mosque, which will be open until 10pm and as per standard operating procedures (SOPs),” said Mohd Shibli on Monday (April 12).

“Apart from zakat fitrah, I would also like to remind all Muslims to pay their zakat harta (property). Payment can be made at all our branches, through our agents or online.”

On another matter, Mohd Shibli announced that TBS would launch the e-statement for zakat pendapatan (income) made via salary deduction and this could be downloaded from the ‘Baitulmal Kamek’ portal beginning April 19.

He said TBS was targeting RM5.4 million in zakat fitrah and RM90 million in zakat harta this year.

“We plan to distribute and channel them accordingly to education, welfare and Islamic institutions.”

Also present were TBS deputy general manager Bolhassan Iskandar Taibi, Finance and Administration head Sulaiman Mahili, and Development and Wakaf head Iskandar Allan.
