22 in S’wak lose RM10,000 election deposits

KUCHING: Twenty-two candidates in Sarawak who contested in the 15th general election (GE15) lost their deposits after getting less than one-eighth of the total votes polled in their constituencies.

Among the first who lost the election deposit was Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Hud Andri in Igan. He could only manage 1,162 votes.

Both PH’s Japar Suyut in Lawas and Ibil Jaya (Saratok) also lost their deposits when they could only obtain 1,163 and 1,221 votes respectively.

Each candidate lost their deposit amounting to RM10,000.

Other candidates from PH who lost their deposits were Langga Lias in Lubok Antu who garnered only a mere 746 votes), Naga Libau @ Tay in Sri Aman (2,021) and Maxel Rojis in Batang Lupar (2,768).

Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) candidates who lost their deposit were Ryan Sim Min Leong in Mas Gading (2,311), Iana Akam in Puncak Borneo (5,578), Voon Lee Shan in Bandar Kuching (1,760) Lue Cheng Hing in Stampin (2,291), Priscilla Lau in Lanang (3,663) and Datuk Lawrence Lai (5,209) in Miri.

The Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) candidates who lost RM10,000 were Susan George in Julau (335), Bobby William in Sibuti (1,361) and Robert Saweng in Kapit (1,357).

Others who lost their deposits were Parti Sedar Rakyat Sarawak’s (SEDAR) Othman Abdillah in Petra Jaya (1,036) and Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Duke Janteng in Bintulu (5,650).

A total of five Independents also lost their deposits, namely George Chen (741) and Dr Elli Luhat (427) in Kanowit, Datuk Wong Tiing Kiong in Lanang (587), Affendi Jeman in Santubong (3,012) and Henry Joseph Usau (1,026) in Selangau.

Meanwhile, voting in Baram was postponed yesterday due to the bad weather conditions and the new date for voting will be announced by EC at a later date.
