3 arrested for flying drones in restricted areas

KUCHING: Police here confirmed the arrests of three men for flying their drones without permission at nomination centres last Saturday (Nov 5).

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri in a statement, said they had received two police reports of drones flying in restricted areas.

The first arrest involving a man in his 40s, happened at a house in Taman Peaceful, Jalan Semarak where a drone was spotted around the Petra Jaya nomination centre.

Whereas, the second and third arrests involving two men in their 30s, happened at the Serian nomination centre.

“The team managed to seize two drones, a remote control and a phone from all three suspects.

“Following the arrests, the police opened two investigation papers under Section 447 of the Penal Code/Regulation 140 of the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016.

“All of them were released on police bail once the investigation was completed,” he said.

Azman stated that the investigation papers will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further instructions.

In addition, a total of 75 applications for permits to hold “ceramah” (political talks) in the state for the 15th general election (GE15), have been approved over the weekend and the talks were carried out smoothly without any untoward incidents.

“Once again, I urge all political parties not to carry out any activities that could violate the laws set throughout the campaign period to maintain public safety and order.

“The police will not hesitate to take action against any party according to the provisions of the existing law,” he said.
