31 people homeless after fire destroys four houses in Sibu

SIBU: Thirty-one people were made homeless after an afternoon blaze laid waste to four houses in Lorong Bahagia Selatan 4 here yesterday (March 1).

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident as they managed to get to safety.

Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said firemen from Sungai Merah and Sibu Central stations were promptly deployed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 2.36pm.

“When the team arrived at the scene, the fire had completely destroyed two of the houses while the other two were 80 percent destroyed,” he said in a statement today (Mar 2).

The firemen managed to bring the fire under control within 10 minutes of their arrival at the scene at 2.45pm.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the teams wrapped up the operation at around 5.30pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
