KUCHING: Police arrested 46 suspects, aged between 15 and 57, after carrying out 26 raids against illegal gambling operations in Sarawak last week.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Dato’ Datuk Dev Kumar said the operation was conducted from 10 to 16 April with 21 of the raids involving those selling illegal lottery (illegal 4D) tickets at the counters.

“The 21 illegal 4D raids resulted in the arrest of 29 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM4,338, mobile phones, portable printers, calculators and stationeries,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

He said the CID headquarters team carried out 12 raids while the Padawan District CID team carried out 5 raids.

“The district CID teams in Kuching, Sibu and Miri carried out two raids each while the CID teams in Bintulu, Limbang and Kota Samarahan carried one raid each,” he added.

Dev Kumar said twelve of the raids were conducted at public places, eight at shoplots, four at grocery shops and two at coffee shops.

He said besides the raids against illegal 4D, four online gambling raids were also conducted in Miri and resulted in the arrest of eleven individuals, as well as the seizure of 52 computers used for the activity.

“A raid was also conducted at the five-foot-way of a coffee shop in Kuching where 6 individuals were arrested for illegal off-course betting. Mobile phones, horse race schedules and betting slips were also seized,” he said.

Dev Kumar added that those arrested were being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
