SARIKEI: A total of 51 community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) in Meradong received their letters of appointment/service extension at the Meradong District Office here on yesterday.

Among the new appointees were five Tuai Rumah (longhouse chiefs), and the extension of service were for one Pemanca (assistant headman), two Penghulu (headmen), 34 Tuai Rumah, two Ketua Kampung (village chiefs), and eight Kapitan (Chinese community leaders).

The presentation of the appointment letters was conducted by the acting district officer of Meradong, Thomas Geoffrey Kendawang and witnessed by Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing.

Ding said that KMKK served as the eyes and ears of the government to ensure that issues about welfare, security, economy, and others were elevated to higher levels if they could not be resolved at the grassroots level.

“KMKK serves as the frontline in each area, playing a role in all aspects, whether conveying government policies, addressing people’s issues to relevant government agencies, or disseminating the latest information directly to the grassroots level,” he said.
