KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 65 cases of occupational accidents as of February this year.

According to a report from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, 64 cases are classified as non-permanently disabled (THUK) while one case is categorised as permanently disabled (HUK).

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Certification Sarawak Regional Office board of director Thomas Balan said through the NIOSHCERT Seminar Series 2023 themed ‘Practising Integrity and Health and Safety at Workplace in Accelerating Organisation’s Sustainability’, it will focus on awareness and understanding ISO standards.

He said this is also important to help organisations manage systematic safety and health risks to employers, employees and the public.

“Good implementation of ISO 45001, ISO 45003 and ISO 21101 in Malaysia in particular can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This is in line with the government’s efforts to accelerate progress towards the SDGs by 2030.

“To achieve that goal, NIOSHCert applies the elements of sustainability development through exercises related to the management system and auditing activities carried out,” he said at the launching of the seminar at Citadines Upland here, today.

He said the seminar is being conducted for the first time in Kuching where it covers areas such as health, occupational safety, psychosocial factors and specific risks for the travel tourism sector. About 50 participants from various agencies joined the one-day seminar.

Apart from Kuching, Thomas said similar seminars will be held in Sabah, Johor, Kuantan, Penang and Selangor.

Also present at the launching were NIOSH Certification Sarawak manager Lawrence Caeser Chau.
