80 attend World Red Crescent Day celebration in Kapit

KAPIT: Some 80 people comprising Malaysian Red Crescent Kapit Chapter (MRC Kapit) members, heads of government department and community leaders attended the World Red Crescent Day celebration held at Tekam Café here, recently.

Bukit Goram assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat officiated at the function.

MRC Kapit chairman, Dr SiaTih Kong said in conjunction with the celebration, they held various activities including the adoption of Red Crescent baby, tree planting project, launching of MRC flag sale, blood and organ donation campaigns and dinner.

The theme of the World Red Crescent Day celebration this year is ‘Everywhere for everyone’.

“Through networking we serve everyone in need on the humanitarian ground. World Red Cross organisation reach out to the needy with some 450 paid staffs and 17 million volunteers worldwide responding to needy in time of emergency especially the war torn counties to alleviate the suffering (refugee),” he said.

On the tree planting project, Dr Sia said uncontrolled cutting and clearing of forest land had adversely affected the global warming which had been worsened by the emission of the carbon dioxide from factories.

“Because of the global warming, the glacier in the South and North Pole melted and has resulted in the rising of the sea level. The global warming has adversely affected the weather causing extreme climate change in some parts of the world, affecting the agriculture industries,” he said.
