Tired of ironing? T-shirts and dress shirts get wrinkly after going through the washing machine for a few reasons, say experts. In some cases, it could be that the washing machine was simply too full — there should always be at least a hand’s length worth of space between the clothes and the top of the drum, says a consumer centre in Germany. But more space does not always reduce wrinkles.

When clothes sit too long in the machine, they can also get wrinkly. The experts advise taking your clothes out as quickly as possible and hanging them up to dry. Some washing machines also have a special programme that helps avoid wrinkles, by keeping the clothes moving for a little longer after the last wash-and-rinse cycle is over. – dpa
