SIBU: Policemen from the D4 Unit/Task Force and D7 Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) of the Sibu District Police Headquarters on Monday night seized various brands of contraband liquor worth about RM68,000 and various brands of cigarettes worth about RM1,000 in two separate raids conducted simultaneously at two premises here.
Sibu Police chief, ACP Zailanni Amit said the guardians of the premises, a 46-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man, were arrested during the raids.
“At about 9.30pm, a woman was arrested at the premises at Maju Road.
“129 boxes of various brands of liquor and 128 cartons of various brands of cigarettes, believed to have been smuggled, were also seized at the premises.
“The woman suspect, who failed to show any documents, was arrested under the Customs Act 1967 while the goods were confiscated. The Customs Department has been informed,” Zailanni told reporters here yesterday.
He added in the other raid which was conducted simultaneously at another premises at Wong King Huo Road, police detained a male suspect believed to have been involved in the smuggling of alcoholic beverages.
“A total of 441 boxes of alcoholic beverages were seized at the premises. The suspect failed to show any documents and was arrested while the goods were confiscated under the Customs Act 1967. The Customs Department has been informed,” he said.
He added that the simultaneous raids on the two premises were conducted after public tip-offs.
