KUCHING: 41 individuals comprising 25 men and 16 women aged between 17 and 70 years were arrested by police during a statewide operation against illegal gambling last week.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Dato’ Dev Kumar Sree Shunmugam in a statement here yesterday said for the past one week (from 13 to 19 March), a total of 26 raids were carried out by the police against all forms of illegal gambling activities in the state.
“Twenty-two of the raids were on illegal 4D gambling and the CID headquarters team carried out 14 raids while the district CID teams in Kuching, Sibu and Padawan conducted two raids each.
“There was a raid each too by the district CID teams in Miri city and towns like Bintulu, Kota Samarahan, Bau, Saratok and Marudi,” he said.
Dev Kumar said in Kuching, most of the raids were conducted at the Kenyalang Commercial Area which had generated a lot of public complaints.
He also said the cases in Bau and Marudi towns involved cyber gambling where a total of 34 computers used were seized.
“These raids against illegal 4D resulted in 26 people arrested and cash amounting to RM6,633, mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and others were seized,” he said, adding that 12 of the raids were conducted at public places, eight at shoplots, four at grocery shops and two at coffee shops.
Dev Kumar said those arrested were being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act, 1953.
“We will continue to conduct raids to get rid of illegal gambling activities done openly in public places in the city and other parts of the state,” he added.
