NEW YORK: A strong earthquake hit the Doti district in far-western Nepal early Wednesday morning, leaving six people dead and five others injured, a local official said.

Several buildings collapsed in the tremor measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale that struck at 2.12am local time Wednesday.

“The dead bodies were recovered from the debris of the collapsed structures.

“The injured are receiving treatment in a local hospital,” Kalpana Shrestha, Doti’s chief district officer, told Xinhua.

The epicentre is in the Khaptad National Park area, Shrestha said, noting security personnel have been mobilised as well in the search and rescue operations.
