PUTRAJAYA: One hundred students from six public universities have been selected to undergo a two-month MOE-Intel Elite Internship Programme which will give them exposure to industry-standard chip design software.

The programme, which starts on June 24 and is a collaboration with Intel Malaysia, involves students from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Education Minister, Dr Maszlee Malik, said when launching the programme today that it is being initiated at the right time because there is a critical need to keep pace with the Fourth Industrial Revolution and for electronics engineers.

“I urge all students to grab this golden opportunity and absorb the knowledge transfer. This is the time for students to enhance their problem-solving skills,” he said.

The programme includes training for 12 lecturers from the above universities under a visiting faculty member programme that will equip them with industry knowledge on silicon design.

Maszlee said the programme is part of a new initiative by the Higher Education Department called the ‘Academia Industry Expert Exchange Programme’ designed for two-way expertise-sharing to promote a greater understanding of the needs and expectations of academia and industry.

“With this kind of programme, graduates from the electronic or microelectronic field can be directly absorbed into the industries,” he said. – Bernama
