SELANGAU: The state government has done its best to help in resolving the issue of an abandoned Rural Electricity Scheme (RES) project in this district.

Utilities Assistant Minister (Rural Electricity) Datuk Liwan Lagang said the abandoned RES project is located at the Jalan Kua/Ulu Mukah area.

He said the project had been abandoned for the past eight years under the Rural Development Ministry (KPLB) and was now being continued and taken over by the state government.

“The state government has allocated this electricity connection project with an estimated cost of RM17 million for 13 longhouses which will commence in January, next year,” he said.

Liwan this while officiating at the earth-breaking ceremony of Project Supply and Installation of RES at Selangau held at Rumah Sawong Baling, Sungai Wong Atas Ulu Mukah, here on Saturday (Dec 19).

Also present were Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang, Pemanca Mathew Ganggang, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) representatives and other local community leaders.

The Belaga assemblyman said the project was under the Rural Electrification Project (Turnkey) for the Jalan Kua / Ulu Mukah area.

The project will benefit 346 households from 13 longhouses in the area, he said.

He noted that the project was already in the tender process and had been long awaited by area’s residents.

Liwan further stressed that because the project was abandoned, the state government decided to take over and implement the project with SEB appointed as the implementing agency.

“This project, among others, includes cable installation work over a distance of 60 kilometres to connect all the longhouses involved,” he explained.

In the meantime, Liwan also revealed that a dialogue session with the residents involved would be held before commencing the project and after its completion.

He explained that the dialogue would be held to provide information to the residents on the details of the project, the wiring scheme in the house and also to avoid any issues that arise pertaining to the project.
