DEBAK: The action plan to overcome the flood issue should be given priority as a high-impact programme by the government such as done by the Dutch in overcoming similar problems.

Deputy Community Welfare Minister Mohammad Razi Sitam said, he strongly agreed if the Sarawak government wanted to adopt the method used by developed countries like the Netherlands to reduce the problem of flooding in low-lying areas as well as the threat of high tide phenomenon.

According to him, humans cannot possibly be able to control natural phenomenon such as high tides and unseasonal heavy rains.

“But at least we must have a comprehensive plan of action for a long-term solution.

“Because looking at the village in my own constituency, which is Debak, it seems to have become a syndrome when the incessant rain continues upstream, especially when it coincides with the high tide phenomenon… the village is submerged.

“The impact on the lives of the residents is not once or twice. Some had to move, houses and property were damaged causing losses.

“Therefore, I strongly agree with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s wish that the Sarawak government review the drainage system in Sarawak comprehensively by emulating the progress made by the Netherlands in overcoming the flood problem,” he said.

He said this when contacted to get his response on the flash flood incident in Debak, yesterday.

The Saribas assemblyman also expected government agencies to be more proactive, especially involving projects to deal with floods that had already been planned.

“I’m sure it’s not just the people who are wondering, even myself.

“As a representative of the people, I place projects to overcome floods as a priority.

“What’s more, now floods are everywhere in Sarawak. Some are unexpected and the residents have to face an emergency without any preparation. We are very sympathetic,” he said.

Meanwhile Razi also asked for the people’s cooperation in the villages involved to support the government’s efforts to implement various projects to overcome the flood problem such as building canals as an alternative channel for water overflow, in addition to improving the drainage system in the villages.
