SELANGAU: The town is poised to emerge as a producer of coffee in addition to oil palm and other agricultural produce.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has announced that a study on coffee Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) will be conducted to ensure favorable weather conditions for coffee cultivation.

“The findings of this study will allow us to effectively manage coffee production. This is why digital Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is crucial, as it can assist us even in the production of coffee.

“This signifies that coffee, oil palm, and other agricultural products will be promoted, with Selangau becoming a hub for both buyers and producers,” he said in a press conference at the Selangau District Office here today (Dec 18).

Abang Johari also highlighted the potential for organising festivals in Selangau with the presence of Selangau Riverfront to attract visitors to the town.

“For instance, during Christmas, we can host a month-long festival, drawing visitors to our town. Envision the presence of Selangau coffee (Selangau Brand of Coffee) with its distinctive flavor – visitors would come to Selangau to savor the coffee, contributing to the local economy,” he added.

Meanwhile, Selangau MP Edwin Banta in his speech said that they are currently collaborating with the Department of Agriculture and community leaders to promote coffee cultivation.

“At this stage, it is in its early phase, distributing Liberica coffee seeds to longhouse residents interested in trying their hand at coffee farming,” he said.

In respond to this, Abang Johari said that he will discuss the matter further with Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Seri Stephen Rundi Utom to distribute incentive to the local to help them with the coffee farming project.
