KUCHING: Perhaps, instead of completely abolishing the Public Service Pensions Scheme, certain provisions of the present Pension Act can be considered for amendment, suggested Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak chairman Mohamad Ibrahim Hamid.

“The Pension Act is still in force. What is the Act for then if there is no longer pension provision for public servants?” he said to New Sarawak Tribune on Friday.

He was of the view that it was wise to give an option, either the pension scheme or Employees Provident Fund (EPF) to newly recruited public servants rather than to cease pension.

“The public has not opted for the provision of collective agreement for public servants and pensions are one of the benefits for public servants,” Mohamad Ibrahim remarked.

On Wednesday, director-general of Public Service Datuk Seri Borhan Dolah said that starting next year, new appointments in the public service may no longer be made under the permanent and pension schemes but will be made under an improved contractual scheme.
