KUCHING: The first phase of the rejuvenation project for the Ang Cheng Ho quarry in Batu Kawah is running smoothly.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the project is currently 78 per cent complete, despite the delay brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I want to thank the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), who is the implementing agency as well as contractor, for making progress through this extremely challenging construction and difficult economic time,” he said on his social media platform today.

Elaborating further, Dr Sim, who is also the assemblyman for Batu Kawah, added that the 20-acre lake is replenished by natural rainfall at a rate of one metre per month.

In January last year, the New Sarawak Tribune reported that the RM 9.8 million project was erected over four acres of the 29-acre quarry.

The project, which is expected to be completed in 15 months, among others, would include a multipurpose sports and community hall with an innovation hub, rentable office spaces, and co-working spaces.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated at the project’s earth-breaking ceremony on Jan 5 last year.

Once completed, this project, together with other projects in the Batu Kawah constituency, would not only be a catalyst for the local economy and tourism, but would also improve the quality of life for locals.
