KUCHING: The launch of the Malaysian Business Angel Network (MBAN) Sarawak by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) today (Feb 10) aims to introduce the concept of angel investment to high net-worth individuals in Sarawak.

It also serves as a registration drive for the newly formed association in line with the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy and the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

SDEC said that prior to the founding of the Sarawak Chapter, more than 100 high net-worth individuals have participated in learning more about angel investing through programmes jointly organised by SDEC and MBAN.

(Angel investment is a form of venture by wealthy individuals who invest in businesses and provide capital for startups that need quick funding.)

“These included online workshops on the topic of ‘Corporate Angel Investing’ and ‘Getting Started With Early Stage Investing’.

“We have also previously organised ‘Coffee and Conversation’ in collaboration with the Kuching Chinese General Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KCGCCI),” SDEC said in a statement.

It also added that MBAN Sarawak coincides with the Digital Village Accelerator (DiVA) initiatives.

“DiVA, is a flagship programme under the Sarawak Digital Ecosystem, targeting local startups to accelerate their growth and maturity, with emphasis on increased revenue generation, market expansion and investment potential,” it added.

MBAN Sarawak Chapter will become the vehicle to provide necessary services such as consultancy, advisory, deal flow and more for its members, and in return, they enjoy the benefits and perks of becoming an angel investor.

MBAN is dedicated to fostering a thriving environment for tech startups and advancing Sarawak’s digital economy.

With the opening of MBAN Sarawak, it intends to boost the growth of tech companies in the state and encourage greater private sector involvement in the development of Sarawak’s digital economy.

Present during the launching ceremony were chairman of MBAN Sarawak Datuk Patrick Liew, chief executive officer of Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) Suhartano Osman, director of SDEC Anne Kung and chief executive officer of Cradle Fund Norman Matthieu Vanhaecke.
