KUCHING: The anticipated merger between Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) into a single party by December 2023 is an external matter that does not involve the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.

Youth Chief of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Datuk Snowdan Lawan stated that whether the merged party would become a component of GPS in the future would be collectively determined by the GPS Supreme Council.

“At the moment, we see this as an external matter from GPS. It’s either determined by the parties’ supreme councils or through a memorandum of understanding; there’s nothing beyond that.

“This is limited to PDP, so it doesn’t involve GPS,” he told reporters when met at the Imperial Hotel here yesterday.

Snowdan noted that they are currently waiting for the follow-up decision to be made by the GPS Supreme Council regarding the outcome of the merger between the two parties.

“The GPS Supreme Council will decide whether it needs to be brought up for further discussion in their meeting if necessary in the future,” he added.

Earlier, PDP president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing confirmed that PDP and PSB would merge into a single party by December this year.

The confirmation was announced following the unity dinner in Sibu last Saturday.

“I want to express my appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his consent to allow them to collaborate.

“I hope our aspiration to merge by December will come to fruition,” he had said.
