KUCHING: The historic Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building will undergo a transformation into the Sarawak Arts Centre, with the renovation project officially commencing on May 2.

Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said that the project is expected for completion within two and a half years.

“The Sarawak Arts Centre project at the old DUN building will be handed over to the contractor on May 2. It is expected to take two and a half years to complete,” he said during the Aidilfitri gathering organised by the Sarawak Arts Council (MSS) on Saturday night.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is scheduled to attend the handover ceremony.

“The Sarawak government is fully funding this initiative, with the renovation costs of the DUN building and the adjacent structure exceeding RM100 million,” he added.

Meanwhile, the gathering also featured cultural festivities, with Abdul Karim and his Deputy, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, participating in the traditional ‘bermukun’ dance.
