KUCHING: Remote villages in the Baleh constituency continue to receive food aid despite a journey of up to four hours to reach some of the longhouses.
Baleh assemblyman Tan Sri James Jemut Masing, talking about this challenge, said: “There are no less than 200 longhouses in the Baleh constituency, in some instances, it will take three to four hours using treacherous timber tracks to reach these longhouses.”
Masing, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, said rain or shine, his team never failed to deliver food aid to these longhouses.
“I am grateful to the delivery boys of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) for their efforts in helping those in need in the far-flung places in my area.
“My service centre is constantly doing the organisation to ensure every family is given food assistance since the first day of the movement control order (MCO) on March 18,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
When asked whether using a helicopter would be a faster option, he said he was unsure of the actual figures but it could cost over RM3,000 per hour.
“The helicopter can’t lift much, plus not all longhouses have a landing pad and thus food items have to be delivered by road,” Masing explained.
