KUCHING: Villagers of Kampung Kudei here have received some wooden planks to rebuild their damaged wooden walkway bridge in the area.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii was present to hand over the wooden planks on Saturday (Dec 17) after paying a visit to the village.

“I paid a visit to Kampung Kudei to hand over some wood to the villagers for them to rebuild some of the rotten wooden walkway bridge to the different wooden squatter houses in the village.

“Due to long-term rot and constant flooding in the area, many of the wooden walkways have decayed, and some walkways have even been seriously damaged.

“That is why, led by locals in the area, I personally visited Kampung Kudei to learn about the issue and see for myself the condition of the wooden bridge walkway. The decay of the walkway was worse than expected, which has endangered the safety of residents, especially children,” he said in a Facebook post.

He added the existing wooden bridge walkway runs through the entire wooden house area and is also the only pedestrian walkway for the residents to the house, and as such the construction of the wooden bridge walkway is very important.

“Under the assistance of a charitable resident representative, we managed to find some well-meaning people who were willing to sell second-hand wooden planks that were suitable for building wooden bridge walkways at an affordable price.

“The residents also inspected the wood and were happy with the condition of it and thus my office helped with the purchase of the wood planks so that the residents can build the walkway as soon as possible,” he said.

Dr Yii added that the Kampung Kudei Squatter area is located at the boundary of the state constituencies of Satok and Batu Lintang.

“There are hundreds of households staying here, almost all of them are low-income families. Due to the dense neighbourhood, the sanitary conditions of Kampung are also relatively poor,” he said.
