PADAWAN: A technician fell victim to an online investment scheme, losing a total of RM226,948.

Padawan OCPD Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad confirmed that they received a report from the 59-year-old man on Monday (Feb 13).

Some time in June last year, the victim was introduced to an investment scheme called ‘Eccoin’ by a friend.

“The friend told the victim that he himself invested and profited from the investment platform, which uses USD currency.

“The victim agreed to participate and downloaded the investment app to monitor the rise and fall of stocks,” said Supt Abang Zainal Abidin.

Between June 22 and Aug 19 last year, the victim transferred a sum of RM226,948 into three accounts via 15 transactions.

“The amount of profit that the victim should have received, based on the investment amount, was USD154,272.62, equivalent to RM647,945.”

Later on Aug 17, the victim was informed by the customer service centre that the investment platform was hacked and it would be upgrading to a newer platform.
