MIRI: Sarawak achieved an estimated RM106 million in total economic impact for business events despite the significant spread of Covid-19 this year.

The amount included RM58 million in direct delegates’ expenditure, RM6.4 million in tax revenues apart from creating 8,480 jobs in related sectors.

There were 31 secured business events which attracted 39, 356 delegates under the business events planners incentivised packages during the period.

Disclosing this at the launch of Business Events Tribal Meet in Miri today, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said, despite the challenge brought by Covid-19, the industry (business events) had not faltered.

“We stood together as one to ensure that we did not lose sight of what we wanted for Sarawak,” he said.

Abdul Karim added that BESarawak was the voice for Sarawak’s business events planners and partners when the state had a temporary economic shutdown a few months ago.

He said the package had also proven its effectiveness as business events cancellation was at a low with just three cancellations, leaving 95 percent of the events ongoing under the business events calendar this year.
