SPAOH: Sand digging activities by a private company at Sungai Saribas must be stopped immediately.

Saribas Assemblyman Mohammad RaziSitam, said at the same time he urged the Land and Survey Department to study and re-check on the digging activities as they are causing erosion at the riverside near the Seruai Islam graveyard site which is worsening.

“We want Land and Survey Betong Branch to study the geographical factor in that area,” he said when contacted, yesterday.

He said that it is understood that the erosion at Saribas River had long been happening, and now it is affecting the cemetery site.

“The graveyard site is used by the community from Kampung Bungin, Belingan, Mangut, Serembang, Tanjung Assam, Sebemban, Buda and Spaoh.”

He said he had raised the issue during the previous State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting in order to protect that particular land because it is the oldest and first graveyard for the Muslims in Saribas.

“We understand the complacency of the people and that’s why we do not want the villagers to worry about the erosion of the graveyard site,” he said.

He will then discuss with the State Government in particular the proposal to extend the cemetery site there.
