BINTULU: Maintain the spirit of unity and harmony in the multi-racial and religious community in this state.

This was pointed out by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the inauguration ceremony of the new building of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bintulu, yesterday.

Uggah, who was represented by the Director of the Other Religious Affairs Unit (UNIFOR), Datuk Jack Aman Luat, also reminded the public not to be easily swayed or influenced by a sensitive or controversial issue that is distorted by irresponsible parties through the media of cyberspace whether social media, media superficial or electric.

On the other hand, the parties involved need to understand and examine the issue in depth with a sane mind before making or taking action, he said.

He insisted, reckless actions or responses would cause religious disagreements that could undermine religious unity and harmony among pluralistic communities in this state.

“It would be better if the issue was discussed and a solution sought through a body such as the Other Religious Affairs Unit (UNIFOR) which acts as a bridge between mosques and other houses of worship,” he added.

Uggah, who is also the minister responsible for looking after UNIFOR, also asked synagogue leaders to take note of any economic development plans in the 2030 Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030) action plan launched by the Sarawak government, recently.

“Let us not be ignorant of knowledge because this will restrict our proper participation,” he said.

In the meantime, Uggah said for the year 2023 Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has approved another RM100 million for UNIFOR.

He explained that it is proof of the commitment of the GPS government in protecting the well-being of the people of Sarawak to ensure that all religions in the state continue to be protected, thus reflecting the Sarawak government’s inclusive policy towards the various religions and beliefs that the people of Sarawak follow.

Also present were Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming, Special Officer to Bintulu Member of Parliament Steven Kong Kai Seng, president of Malaysia Union Mission of Seventh Day Adventist, Pastor Abel Bana and president of Seventh Day Adventist Mission of Sarawak, Pastor Semilee Tajau.
