Capitalise on free education, Harden tells young

SIMANGGANG: Young Sarawakians have been urged to seize the forthcoming opportunity of free education at higher learning institutions owned by the state government.

“By 2026, when the state government enforces free education at Sarawak-owned universities, it will be crucial for youths to seize this opportunity,” said Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis

“Sarawakian youths should embrace this chance to pursue their academic aspirations without financial constraints, thereby equipping themselves with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute effectively to their communities and the broader society.

“It’s a pivotal moment for the future generation to grasp and maximise the benefits of this transformative policy,” he said.

He was speaking after witnessing the oath-taking ceremony of the Youth Malaysian Movement (YMM) Simanggang branch for the session 2024-2026, on Saturday night held here.

A total of 25 newly elected YMM committee members led by its chairman, Lim Thian Yee, took the oath and pledged their commitment to serving the community and upholding the values of the organisation.

Harden who is also Simanggang assemblyman urged them to fulfill their duties with diligence and dedication.

Emphasising the importance of their roles as leaders within the community, he encouraged them to serve as beacons of positive change and advocates for the needs and aspirations of the youth.

Additionally, Harden stressed the significance of fostering unity and cooperation among cultures, highlighting the rich diversity that characterises Sarawak.

He urged the committee members to turn their commitment into concrete initiatives that address the challenges faced by youth, such as access to education, employment opportunities, and personal development.

He also stressed the importance of aligning the organisation’s efforts with the government’s policy of strengthening quality human capital.

At the event, Harden approved a grant of RM5,000 from his Minor Rural Project (MRP) funds to YMM’s Simanggang branch.

Also present were YMM Sarawak chairman Tan Chun Han, Sri Aman District Walikota, Anthony Abell Chendan, Temenggong Kueh Aik Seng and Penghulu Leonard Libau.
