KUCHING: The Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC) Ministry will present the country’s carbon policy framework at the Malaysian Climate Change Action Council (MyCAC) meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this week.

The meeting will be attended by ministers and chief ministers.

NRECC Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said his ministry will go into the details of the country’s carbon policy so that it can be implemented as soon as possible.

“Some of the policies involve negotiations at the international level. And we also understand that not only Sarawak but other states had also brought up this carbon related issue.

“That is why, as a facilitator at the federal level, it is important for us to prepare the policy. We will prepare it this year and its basis will be presented this week,” he said during a press conference after his working visit at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.

Asked on the specific provision of the Bill to monetise and control carbon trading, Nik Nazmi said the federal government will have to first see the outcome of the meeting.

“But at the moment, there is no Bill on the matter. This is because it is at the policy level. The current Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) we have is Bursa Carbon Exchange (BCX).

“And there are some improvements that need to be made in BCX so we will have comprehensive discussions with the state government.

“As such, we in NRECC will continue to engage with the state government as land matters are are under its (state government) jurisdiction,” he said.
