MIRI: A 29-year-old woman was detained on Monday on the suspicion of shoplifting.

The suspect was detained inside her rented room at a budget hotel here at Taman Jade Manis around 6.30pm by a Miri Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team.

This was after she was allegedly spotted stealing a pair of slippers worth RM12 from a 24-hour mini mart at Jalan Lee Tak here earlier that day.

The incident was reported to have occurred at 1.47pm and a police report was lodged by a sales assistant who witnessed the suspect stealing the slippers.

She could not detain the suspect at that time as she was occupied with other customers.

Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari confirmed that the arrest was made.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.

Preliminary investigation revealed that this was not the first time that the suspect has shoplifted from the same mini mart, as on January this year, she was also caught by the police for shoplifting food.
