Career criminal gets prison time for robbing woman

KUCHING: Haierul, a 23-year-old career criminal, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for robbing a 25-year-old woman at Taman Rekreasi MJC Batu Kawa in April.

The sentence was delivered by Magistrate Manson Jaro Lenya Barayan after a charge framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code was read.

The incident took place around 8.40pm on April 29 when the victim was walking alone in the park. Mohamad approached her and snatched her handbag, containing an identity card, three ATM cards and RM5 in cash, before fleeing.

The victim promptly lodged a police report, leading to Mohamad’s arrest on June 10. The complainant accurately identified him during a police line-up.

In another case heard in the same court, Mohamad received an additional 18-month prison sentence for possessing a stolen Nokia phone belonging to a 59-year-old woman.

Previously, in the Sessions Court, Mohamad and his brother were each sentenced to 10 years in prison and 10 lashes of the cane for robbing a woman using a machete at Pending Height car park on May 26.

Mohamad’s modus operandi involved targeting lone women, approaching them on a motorcycle, and robbing them with or without a weapon.
