Cheongsam event brings cultural mix to the fore

BINTULU: Grace and poise took centre stage at the International Women’s Day celebration here with a cheongsam competition organised by the Bintulu Chinese Women’s Association.

Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang said the competition not only highlighted the culture of the Chinese community but also highlighted the beauty of unity and cultural mixing in Sarawak.

“Cheongsam is a traditional Chinese women’s dress that accentuates women’s elegance and grace.

“I understand that we have 16 participants in tonight’s cheongsam competition which not only involves the Chinese but also other ethnicities.

“They will walk in elegant and graceful cheongsam to showcase their femininity and confidence,” he was quoted as saying by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS)

Pang was officiating at the International Women’s Day Cheongsam Gala Competition here on yesterday (March 3).

He acknowledged Women’s Day and how vital it is to recognise and honour the significant contributions and accomplishments of women in the social, political and economic spheres.

“This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #EmbraceEquity.

“In a fair society, women should also have equal opportunities and be respected and included in various options.

“The new generation of women is not only limited to the traditional role of giving birth and raising children, but many women work well and excel in various fields,” he added.

Also present were the Special Officer to Bintulu Member of Parliament (MP) Steven Kong Kai Seng and Bintulu Chinese Women’s Association Chairman Tan Ah Lan.
