SIBU: The Malaysia Chinese-Malay Translation Competition will help promote high-quality translation talent, said Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid.
The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) vice chancellor said it will facilitate better economic and trade cooperation as well as people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
“Translations between the Malay and Chinese languages will help to build a bridge of communication between Malaysia and China, and the rest of the world,” he said during the second Malaysia Chinese-Malay Translation Competition launching ceremony at UTS campus here today (May 12).
The launching ceremony for the competition hosted by UTS and North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power (NCWU) was officiated by Deputy Speaker of Dewan Rakyat Alice Lau.
Khairuddin also said the first and second translation competitions attracted a large number of young students in Malaysia, as a result of the effort from the Confucius Institute to promote Malaysia-China cultural exchanges.
“Just before the 2nd translation competition, the Confucius Institute established the Chinese-Malay Translation Research Centre to invite well-known experts from Malaysia and China to conduct research on related topics by analysing data from the translation competition.
“It is to promote the cultivation of Chinese and Malay translation talent,” he said.
Khairuddin hoped the event will help find more bilingual translation talents, promote people-to-people exchanges, and economic and trade cooperation between Malaysia and China.
