KUCHING: State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen calls on voters in Pujut to use the by-election to reject Barisan Nasional (BN).

He said the by-election would be a prelude to the 14th general election, the result of which would determine the fate of the country.

“The outcome of the by-election will determine the fate of our country, whether we will continue to be governed by a kleptocratic government,” he told a press conference at the State Legislative Assembly Complex’s Media Centre here, Friday.

“A big victory for Pakatan Harapan in the Pujut by-election will definitely be a great momentum for change in the federal government in the GE14 which is just around the corner.

“So I think this by-election has 3-tier significance. One is about the oppression against a rightfully elected assemblyman (ADUN). Second is an expression and chance to say ‘No’ to the high-handedness in which the government is doing thing not only to an ADUN but to the people manifested through all government departments in the way they implemented policies. Third is the impact of the GE14 which will determine the country’s course in the next five years,” said Chong, who is also Kota Sentosa State Assemblyman.

On DAP’s preparation for the by-election, Chong said, “We will have a meeting soon to decide on the candidate.

“But meanwhile, our Miri branch and comrades have been advised to start their machinery and do the neccessary preparations,” he said, adding that the party would be going in full force not only at the state level but also at the national level to face the might of BN and its machinery.
