KUCHING: The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability emphasises the need for everyone to make an effort to address climate change and it requires collective action.

Its Deputy Minister Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said climate change is currently impacting weather patterns globally.

“In Sarawak, after the Chap Goh Mei celebration, there used to be less rainfall.

“But now, after the Chap Goh Mei, it keeps raining, this indicates an abnormality in the weather,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the Sarawak-level Earth Day 2023 celebration at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Community Hall here yesterday.

Dr Hazland further said if climate change is not tackled seriously, it will lead to unpredictable weather patterns, floods, and typhoons.

“Not only it causes economic problems, but also has a detrimental impact on people,” he stressed.

Therefore, he said, Earth Day celebrations that are filled with programmes such as recycling and organised by the relevant agencies are important as it raises more awareness within the community about climate change.

“At the Ministry level, among others, we have few strategies to combat climate change and that is to involve the local councils to engage with the community and carry out programmes related to preventing climate change,” he said.

Furthermore, he said, the Sarawak government which focuses on renewable energy is an effort to contribute towards the fight against climate change.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak-level Earth Day 2023 celebration is organised by the Department of Environment (DOE) Sarawak, Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and other state and federal agencies.
