KUCHING: Food operators who insist on operating their kitchens or food stalls on the five-foot ways could face compounds for endangering the safety of the public. According to Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Deputy Director, Dr Morshidi Ahmad, out of the 337 premises identified, 60 of them are still operating food stalls on the five-foot ways despite prior warning notices. “We will be issuing notices to these 60 premises again.
If they still do not comply, we will take them to court. “If their sanitation standard is poor, we may revoke their licences and bring them to court too,” Morshidi told the media while checking the food stalls operating on five-foot ways in Satok here yesterday. He stressed that DBKU wanted the operators to set up their stalls inside the premises for the safety of the public.
“When the stalls operate on the five-foot ways, hot oil or water might spill and endanger the public,” he said, adding that DBKU had issued notices to all 337 premises in areas under its jurisdiction in October last year. All are given a three-month grace period to make sure that there is no more cooking or preparing of food on the five-foot ways.
A fine of RM1,500 will be imposed for the first offence while a fine of RM3,000 is imposed on subsequent offences.
