Cops bust ‘Geng Dedek Shiah’, solve six cases

KUCHING: A three-man gang named ‘Geng Dedek Shiah’, was busted by the police for robbing a 24-hour convenience store last week.

The suspects aged between 27 and 43, were arrested at different locations around the city on Sept 15.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the gang had robbed a convenience store at Jalan Bayor Bukit, Tabuan Jaya around 11.30pm on Sept 14.

The victim, who is a cashier, was robbed at knife point by two unknown men with a meat cleaver.

“The modus operandi used by this gang is to brandish a meat cleaver to scare the victim while, wearing helmets and face masks to conceal their identity.

“Their targets are business premises that are operating for 24 hours.

“Also seized from the suspects include a motorcycle believed to have been stolen, a meat cleaver, a helmet, a phone, a T-shirt, a Malay shirt and various jewelery,” he said in a press conference this afternoon.

Background checks found that two of the suspects have 13 and 15 prior records involving drugs, violent crimes and property crimes.

Mohd Azman said all of the suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and they are being remanded until Sept 21 for further investigations.

With this success, the police managed to solve six cases, namely four robberies, one motorcycle theft and one theft in building around Kuching, with an estimated total loss of about RM7,000.

The case is investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed gang robbery, which carries up to 20 years in prison and caning, upon conviction.

Also present are Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata, Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Wong Ing Fung, Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah and Kuching deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa.
